Don't have any fabulous plans for this upcoming weekend? No worries. Check out these great English-y activities going on around our community.
According to the author, Richard Paul Evens, this will be the last Michael Vey book. Come celebrate and buy your copy before it is even available in bookstores.
The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival is fun for the whole family. Day activities are great for kids, while night time entertains with some well versed storytellers. My husband and I love this event, and we have attended for the last 3 years.

Dear Students and Parents,
Thank you for a great first few weeks back at school! I have really enjoyed getting to know each student and setting the tone for the rest of the year. I am excited for all the discussions, books, projects, essays, stories, and academic growth awaiting us this year. I wanted to send out an email to outline a few resources available to students (and parents) to make sure you are aware of everything going on in this class. First of all, my website (mrsmacey.weebly.com) should be your #1 go=to site. I no longer send out weekly emails to parents, outlining what we have accomplished in the week and what projects will be due the following week. Instead, I work diligently to keep the calendar portion of my website up to date and informative so that both students and parents can know what is coming up. Parents, I encourage you to look at the calendar with your child at least once a week and have a discussion on what your child is currently working on in my class. Students, checking the website once a day is going to help you remember what we learned in class and what homework you have at home. Second, I cannot overstate the great value in checking your grades often on Skyward. Your grade should not be a surprise to you nor to your parents. If you earn a low score on something, be sure to study it and retake/redo the test or assignment As Soon As Possible. There are some assignments that have a time limit for redo's. Come see me at a convenient time, and I will gladly help you learn the material. (In this first week of grades, I have even spent some extra time writing comments on grades so that you can be aware of why you earned the grade you did.) Finally, please do not hesitate to come talk to me. Email, phone call, or scheduled appointment before or after school. I am anxious to teach and support you in your growth, but in order for me to do that there must be open conversation between students and myself. I greatly value autonomous students, ones who take personal responsibility for their learning and come ask for support when they need it. I try to respond to emails and phone calls within a day of receiving them. This is going to be a fabulous year! Use these resources and myself to help you through the class. Best, Mrs. Macey Honor’s Students (and Parents), Is anyone else freaking out that the beginning of the school year is rapidly approaching? I am so excited to meet you in just a few short weeks and begin a fantastic, fun, enlightening school year. It really is going to be the best! We will start the year running, and we really have no time to lose. Because of this, I want to give you your first assignment now. This assignment is meant to help me know where you are as a writer as well as introduce me to your ideas and values. You will write a 500 word (approximately 2 pages, double spaced) essay on one of two topics: Growth Mindset or Grit. Don’t know a thing about these topics? That’s ok. See my website for some helpful resources and more information on the assignment. You will turn in the essay on Google Classroom during the first week of school. I will give you more information on turning in the essay on the first day of school.
So, go enjoy the rest of your summer and I will see you on August 23rd. Sincerely, Your very excited teacher :) Mrs. Macey Alright, for those of you who are interested to know, it turns out I will not be moving to California this summer. I am so excited to stay with my Sunset Ridge family and friends. Get ready for another great year!
I love summer and the opportunity it provides for me to dive back into books I have been too busy to read during the school year. Here I will keep a running tally of the books I've been reading over the summer. And I will admit, this summer I have set a few goals for myself:
What are some of your favorite books? Any suggestions on what I should read next? JuneFinished: - Inferno by Dan Brown (2.5 stars- sad I didn't like this one more since I have really enjoyed some of Dan Brown's other books like Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code) - Home by Harlan Coben (3 stars- fun and quick mystery) - A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman (5 stars- I LOVED this book! Ove is such a despicable, old grump, but you cant help but feel for him and love him in the end.) Currently reading: -The Year We Disappeared by - 10 Things Every Writer Needs to Know by Jeff Anderson ( Coming Up: - An Acquaintance with Darkness by Anne Rinaldi - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith JulyComing up: - 1984 by George Orwell - Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss - The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare - Laughing at my Nightmare by Shane Burcaw AugustComing up:
- Anthem by Ayn Rand - I am Number Four by - The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor Dear Students,
Can you believe that you have finished your 9th grade year?! You are ending your time here at Sunset Ridge Middle School and embarking on a new journey as you prepare to move onto new schools, new teachers, and new opportunities. I have loved being your Language Arts teacher. This year has had its roller coaster moments, but I have appreciated your support as we both learned the 9th grade curriculum together. More importantly than the vocab word definitions or the correct placement of the semicolon, I hope you remember the true life lessons that we have discussed over the school year. I wanted to review a few of my favorites with you now:
Students, thank you once again. I love teaching you; I love interacting with you; I love learning with your; I love hearing of your successes. I teach Language Arts not because of my love for books (although that is true too); I teach Language Arts because of how truly applicable the themes are. I hope you are able to reflect on some of the life lessons we covered over the school year and apply them to help you have a happier and more successful life. I dream of the best for all of you! I love you! - Mrs. Macey Regular Language Arts

Parents and Students,
If you could take a few minutes to fill out the following survey, I would greatly appreciate it. I am always looking for how I can improve in my teaching. I love what I do, and I want to do the best I can. Your honest responses help me do that. Thank you. Have you written all of the informational essays and submitted them on Utah Compose?
